The National Hurricane Center The United States (NHC) is monitoring a low pressure system that is located over Puerto Rico and extends to the east of the Bahamas.
Forecasters expect the system to develop over the weekend in the northeastern Caribbean Sea and southwestern Atlantic. So far its probability of formation in the next five days is 30%.
“The system is expected to be very broad and disorganized initially, but environmental conditions could support gradual subtropical or tropical development starting early next week while moving generally north or northwest,” the NHC reported.
This system could be the 14th storm to receive a name in the 2022 hurricane season, and it would be called Nicole.
The NHC continues to issue advisories on Tropical Depression Lisa, which continues to weaken this Thursday after making landfall Wednesday night in Belize as a category 1 hurricane.
The phenomenon is throwing heavy downpours in southeastern Mexico, and meteorologists anticipate waves of 2 to 3 meters high on the coast of Quintana Roo, home to popular tourist centers such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen. In addition, the rains could cause flooding in low-lying areas and an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, authorities warned.
Lisa continues to move west at 17 kilometers per hour. Its center will continue its trajectory through southeastern Mexico during the day and night on Thursday, and will enter the Bay of Campeche on Friday. The cyclone’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 55 kilometers per hour (35 mph). Forecasters do not anticipate that Lisa will pick up strength again.
