The Spanish athlete Ana Peleteiro was proclaimed European triple jump champion this Sunday at the event that is being held in Rome, while also Spanish Mohamed Attaoui took silver in the 800 meters final.
Peleteiro, indoor World Cup bronze this season, demonstrated his great form with the Spain’s first gold in this European Championship. The Galician, current Olympic bronze medalist, will go all out for Paris 2024, a year after her return to competition after becoming a mother.
The Spaniard flew on her fourth attempt for a 14.85 mark to place first and not drop out of continental gold, ahead of the Turkish Tugba Danismaz and the French Ilionis Guillaume.
Almost at the same time, on the track of the Olympic Stadium in Rome, Attaoui broke into a tremendous sprint in the last corner to climb back to silver in the 800, behind the Frenchman Gabriel Tual. Álvaro de Arriba, who could not hold the lead, finished fourth while Adrián Ben was sixth.
With the Peleteiro’s gold and Attaoui’s silver, Spain already has six medals in Rome, after the bronze this Sunday morning of the women’s half marathon team, the silver of Paul McGrath, in the 20 km walk, and Quique Llopis, in the 110 meter hurdles, on Saturday, and the bronze from Marta García in the 5,000, on Friday.
