An opponent in Mali sentenced to two years in prison for “insulting” the leader of the Burkina Faso junta

N’Djim described as a “montage” some images from state television RTB in which an attempted coup against Traoré was reported

Dec. 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The opposition Kaou N’Djim, who was vice president of the National Transitional Council of Mali (CNT), was sentenced this Monday to two years in prison “for publicly insulting a foreign head of state”, specifically the leader of the military junta of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

“I thought that freedom of expression was a right acquired in Mali since the 1991 revolution,” lamented his lawyer, Boubacar Soumaré, who recalled that he had not uttered any insult or offense against anyone, according to Radio France Internationale (RFI). .

The opponent assured in a television program on the Joliba network last November that the images broadcast by Burkina Faso’s state television RTB in which an attempted coup d’état in the country was denounced were a “montage.”

The channel was closed for six months by the High Transitional Authority (HAT), the institution responsible for regulating the media in Mali, following a letter of protest from the Higher Council of Communication of Burkina Faso.

N’Djim is considered a figure close to the leader of the military junta and current transitional president, Assimi Goita, although in the past he has been critical of the former prime minister Choguel Maiga, dismissed at the end of November and replaced by the Major General Abdoulaye Maiga.
