The Mozambican NGO Center for Human Rights has asked the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the dozens of deaths in recent days during a large-scale escape from a maximum security prison in Maputo, the capital, amidst strong post-election protests. .
On December 25, more than 1,500 prisoners managed to escape from the Matula prison, on the outskirts of the capital, after a riot broke out that, according to the latest balance sheet offered this Tuesday by the prison authorities, left at least 35 dead. , while another 332 prisoners have been recaptured.
The NGO has denounced that on the day of the escape the security forces committed “summary executions and serious violations of fundamental rights”, as witnessed, they claim, by several recordings that reveal how “many inmates” were “murdered” and their bodies “disposed of.” in an inhuman way.”
The CDD suspects that the death toll could even exceed 130, of which about a hundred would have been buried in mass graves. That is why he called on the Mozambican authorities on Tuesday to investigate what happened.
In recent months, the streets of the country have been the scene of a situation of chaos without near precedents, with one of the biggest political crises in history, as a result of allegations of fraud by the opposition, which has rejected the victory of the ruling party in the October 9 elections.
The main instigator of the protests is Venancio Mondlane, who has emerged as the main figure of the opposition and the winner of those elections. This weekend, he announced that he will return to Mozambique from his exile to take office as president on January 15.
In these months of protests, it is estimated that more than 300 people have died, most from firearms, while more than 500 have been injured. Another 4,200 have been detained and dozens more are suspected of being missing.
