The Ministry of Defense of Armenia has denounced this Friday the death of an Armenian soldier after a new exchange of shots with the Army of Azerbaijan on the border between the two countries for the second consecutive day, an incident that has also resulted in the death of an Azeri soldier , as reported by Baku.
Specifically, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia has specified in a statement that the incident has left, in addition to one dead, two soldiers injured. “As of 00:30 (local time), the situation at the front is relatively stable,” he said, according to the Armenpress news agency.
“Taking into account that the videos and photos made by the Azerbaijani propaganda are disseminated on various social networks (…) we urge you to refrain from any reference to them or from publishing them,” he added in a statement.
For its part, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan has indicated in a statement that, due to the “provocation of the Armenian Armed Forces”, an Azeri soldier has died. In another statement, he specified that the Armenian Armed Forces have earlier attacked the Azeri Army positions in Basarkechar, in the Kalbajar region, with drones.
This occurs after, the day before, the Government of Azerbaijan reported the death of an Azeri soldier after clashes on the border with Armenia, which led to cross accusations for responsibility for the incident.
The tensions take place a week after talks in the United States between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan, respectively, after which the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, highlighted “significant progress” in their “constructive” contacts.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been involved in various confrontations in recent years, the last in 2020, over the control of Nagorno Karabagh, an Azeri territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the sovietic Union.
Tensions rose again with new security incidents between the two countries due to Baku’s decision to install a “border post” in the Lachín corridor, something criticized by Yerevan and Moscow, which maintains peacekeeping troops deployed in the area after the peace agreement. ceasefire after the 2020 war.
Azerbaijan has repeatedly denounced the transit of arms and ammunition through the Lachin corridor and has said that these operations take place despite the presence of Russian forces in the area, arguing that they must ensure that such deliveries do not have place.
