AMLO in Washington to ask Biden for more work visas for Mexicans

First modification:

US President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador meet in Washington on Tuesday. The meeting, focused on the migratory situation, will also deal with actions to face the inflationary situation and security.

AMLO visits Biden at the White House this Tuesday, July 12, willing to maintain the good neighbor policy, according to the Mexican president.

On the migration issue, key on the agenda of the two presidents, López Obrador has insisted that Mexico wants migration not to be forced, but to be optional and legal.

“How is a nation going to grow without a workforce? So my approach is we are going to agree on work visas,” the president said last week.

bracero program

According to him, the immigrant labor force in the US defines the economy of the two countries. “They work here and send support to their families, thanks to that our economy is picking up,” AMLO said Monday before his countrymen from the window of his hotel in Washington.

The Mexican president advocates emulating the “Bracero Program”, designed in the days of Roosevelt and in the context of World War II. At that time almost five million Mexicans began to work in the agricultural fields of the United States and made US agriculture the most profitable and advanced in the entire planet.

Joe Biden is being criticized in his country for his policy of controlling the southern border. The border patrol apprehends more than 200,000 migrants a month. More than a million and a half migrants have been arrested in 2022. Two weeks ago, 53 migrants were found dead in a truck in Texas.

Cooperation

With this official visit, he intends to reach agreements on the basis of sovereignty, because there is a relationship with the United States that is alien to those agreements that allowed the legal entry of weapons into Mexico and that cost lives, he stresses. “That is no longer allowed. There is cooperation, the sovereignty of Mexico is respected. That is how President Joe Biden has understood it. We have to recognize and thank him,” he said.

In addition to the meeting with Biden at the White House, the president of Mexico will pay tribute to two figures in American history: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom he defined as the best leader of that country for his respectful actions towards Mexico, and assassinated leader Martin Luther King.
