The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said Thursday that the authorities of the Latin American country have been informed about the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada since the famous drug trafficker was arrested in July and denied that there is a “pause” in the relationship with the Government.
Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, when he was still in power, first, and his political ally and successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, later, have asked Washington for information about the capture of Zambada in El Paso, Texas, after landing in a small plane that took him moved from Mexican territory.
“We have cooperated since the day it happened, which was July 25, giving the information we had to the Mexican government,” Salazar said at a press conference. “There is no pause and in reality there has never been a pause,” he added of bilateral ties.
According to the diplomat, the exchange between the parties is “strong, deep and authentic.”
At the end of August, a month before hand over the Presidency to SheinbaumLópez Obrador said that his government had paused its relationship with the United States embassy, after Salazar criticized a controversial judicial reform promoted by the ruling party.
The Mexican prosecutor’s office reported in mid-August that it requested the United States government data about the flight that took Zambada to El Paso, while López Obrador and Sheinbaum have repeatedly asked for information about the case, accusing Washington of not giving it to them.
