Almost 60,000 people crossed the Darién irregularly in October

The National Migration Service of Panama (SNM) reported that 59,773 people passed through illegally the dangerous Darien Gap, in the month of October, an unprecedented number, according to the authorities.

According to the SNM, about 211,355 irregular travelers have arrived in the Central American country this year. Likewise, he pointed out that approximately 70.1% of irregular travelers, who went to the United States, came from Venezuela. That is, 148,285 people.

In addition, he pointed out that from the beginning of January to July, 48,430 people entered Panama through the Darién route. Of this total, 15% were children and young people, and 58% were Venezuelan migrants, followed by Haitians (7.9%) and Cubans (5.2%).

After Venezuelans, the largest number of people who cross the Darién come from Ecuador (7.1%), followed by Haitians (5.8%), Cubans (2.36%), Colombians (2.2%) and Indians (1.19%).

According to Unicef, the number of migrant children and adolescents who have crossed the dangerous Darien jungle, on the border with Colombia, doubled in 2022.
