President Abdelyamid Tebune will face Abdelali Hasani Cherif (MSP) and Youcef Aouchiche (FFS) on September 7.
Aug. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Algeria’s Constitutional Court on Thursday approved the final list of candidates for the upcoming presidential elections on September 7, which includes the country’s president, Abdelyamid Tebune, who is running as an independent candidate and will face Abdelali Hasani Cherif, of the Islamist Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) and Youcef Aouchiche, of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS).
“The Constitutional Court met in closed sessions on July 27, 28, 29 and 30, 2024, to examine the appeals registered with the Registry Office of the Constitutional Court, which amounted to five appeals. The Court also met on July 31, 2024, to approve the final list of candidates for the election of the President of the Republic,” reads a statement from the judicial body reported by the Algerian news agency APS.
Tebune dissolved the Algerian parliament in February 2021 and called for early parliamentary elections. The FLN, which has governed the country since independence in 1962, became the largest party in the June elections, winning 98 seats, a loss of some 63 deputies compared to the 2017 parliamentary elections.
The current Algerian president won the presidential election in 2019 with 58.13 percent of the vote in an election in which the participation rate was just under 40 percent, the lowest figure recorded in the country.
The presidential elections followed protests by the Hirak movement, which called for a renewal of the political system inherited from the FLN. These elections were criticised by the opposition and a large part of the population showed their discontent in the 2020 constitutional referendum.
