Algerian president takes office for a second term after election victory

September 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Algerian President Abdelmayid Tebune was sworn in on Tuesday for a second term following his victory in the elections held on 7 September, when he obtained 84.3 percent of the votes, results that were eventually ratified by the Constitutional Court despite the appeal of his two rivals.

During the ceremony, Tebune presented his vision for the project “Victorious Algeria”, his slogan during the electoral campaign, which will raise the country’s ambitions with “confidence and firmness”, according to the Algerian news agency APS.

He also announced an “open national dialogue” with a view to planning a path towards the “incarnation of a true democracy and not of slogans.”

“The paths of economic development and social progress have been initiated in the new Algeria despite the nature of the exceptional circumstances, and national projects have become a reality that our country is undertaking to achieve more victories and achievements in various fields,” he added.

He then highlighted the “loyalty” and “trust” of the country’s population during a “sensitive period characterized by challenges at the internal, regional and international levels.”

Tebune also praised the country’s youth for helping to overcome “the difficult circumstances of the past five years, faced with the challenge of leading Algeria, deceived and exhausted by the proliferation of deviations, an atmosphere of despair and frustration, a state of collapse of confidence in the symbols of the State and its institutions, the spread of corruption and the plundering of public funds, towards a new Algeria where hope is revived and confidence in the State and its prestige is restored through honesty in words followed by deeds and accompanied by the implementation of the 54 commitments we made to the people.”

Shortly after taking office, the president met with his two electoral rivals, the leader of the Islamist Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelali Hasani Cherif, and the secretary general of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), Yucef Auchiche.

Tebune, 78, took office after elections in 2019, which ended a brief transition period after long-time leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April amid massive protests against his plans to run for a fifth term despite being barred from office due to health problems.

The president, who has the support of the Army and the coalition made up of the historic National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Democratic Rally, has managed to obtain a second term amid complaints about repression against opponents and activists, and growing skepticism among the population about the country’s management.
