Algerian Constitutional Court confirms Tebune's victory in presidential elections with 84 percent of votes

September 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Algeria’s Constitutional Court on Saturday upheld President Abdelmayid Tebboune’s victory in the September 7 presidential election, with 84.30 percent of the vote, following an appeal by the other two candidates.

“Abdelmayid Tebune will be President of the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria for a second term and will assume his functions immediately after taking the oath of office in accordance with Article 89 of the Constitution,” said the president of the court, Omar Belhadj, in statements broadcast by Radio Algérienne.

The announcement comes after Tebout’s two rivals – the leader of the Islamist Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelali Hasani Cherif, and the secretary general of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), Yucef Auchiche – filed appeals on Thursday to protest the results announced by the electoral commission, following the discovery of irregularities that have also been denounced by the president’s campaign.

The Constitutional Court has responded in a statement confirming President Tebune’s victory by an absolute majority, with more than 84 percent of the votes, compared to the 94.65 percent attributed to him last Monday by the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE).

According to the data broken down by the court, the MSP candidate came in second, far behind Tebune, with the support of 9.5 percent of voters, while the FFS candidate was the choice of six percent. The electoral body awarded them six and two percent of the votes respectively, in the results announced previously.

The turnout rate has not changed much, dropping from 48 to 46 percent of the 24.3 million Algerians eligible to vote.

Tebune, 78, first became president after elections in 2019 ended a brief transition period after long-time leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April amid massive protests against his plans to run for a fifth term despite being barred from office due to health problems.
