The Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, received this Monday in Algiers the head of diplomacy of the Saharawi Arab Republic (SADR), Mohamed Sidati, before whom he reaffirmed the Algerian commitment to “the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination from the former Spanish colony.
The two ministers have discussed in Algiers “the perspectives of relaunching the political process”, promoted by the UN and currently at a standstill. Rabat only contemplates a limited autonomy within the Alaouite kingdom, while the Polisario Front claims its right to self-determination.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised in a statement the resumption of direct negotiations between the two parties, with a view to guaranteeing a “political solution” to the conflict that does guarantee the consultation demanded by the Polisario, “according to the decisions of the African Union and the relevant UN resolutions”, according to the note collected by the APS news agency.
Algeria is the main support in the SADR area and in August 2021 it announced the break of diplomatic relations with Morocco, among other reasons due to the discrepancies around Western Sahara. The Algerian Government also broke the Treaty of Friendship with Spain after the endorsement of the Executive of Pedro Sánchez to the Moroccan autonomy plan.
