Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo arrived in Peru this Sunday, where he must serve 18 months in pretrial detention. He will be investigated for receiving bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrecht. His defense requested house arrest for health reasons.

There are three ex-presidents imprisoned in the so-called “prison of the presidents”. Alejandro Toledo, who ruled between 2001 and 2006, was detained on Sunday, April 23, after being extradited to Peru from the United States, where he had resided since 2017.

Who at one point led the fight against corruption, is now in prison accused of receiving bribes.

Toledo has three criminal proceedings, but has only been extradited for one: the accusation of receiving a bribe of about 30 million dollars from the Brazilian company Odebrecht for the construction of a highway.

The prosecutor’s office has requested 20 years in prison and the former president is serving preventive detention for 18 months in the Barbadillo prison.

He is also accused of receiving a four million dollar bribe from another Brazilian construction company, Camargo y Correa, and for using the Ecoteva offshore company to launder money. To prosecute him for these two cases, an extension of extradition must be approved.

House arrest

Toledo, 77, said he does not want to die in prison and asked authorities to place him under house arrest while he is tried. He claimed to be in poor health, due to cancer and other illnesses.

Toledo became president after leading a large citizen mobilization against the autocratic and corrupt regime of Alberto Fujimori. Now he shares a prison with him and another imprisoned former president: Pedro Castillo.
