Airlines canceled more than 1,300 flights in the United States on Wednesday, when a strong winter storm it made its way through the western and central states of the country.
A total of 1,327 flights within, to or from the United States had been canceled as of noon, according to the FlightAware flight-tracking website, which also indicated that 2,030 itineraries were delayed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a tweet on Tuesday that bad weather could cause flight delays or cancellations this week in Minnesota and other Great Lakes and Southern Plains states.
Snow falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour and gusty winds could make travel conditions treacherous and perhaps impossible in parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, the National Weather Service said in its forecast.
Regional airline SkyWest led cancellations with 312 flights, followed by budget carrier Southwest Airlines with 248 trips and Delta Air Lines with 246 flights.
Southwest and Delta said they are closely monitoring the progress of the storm, while SkyWest did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
