“When they made the proposal to us, we set two conditions: one, that there would be no mention of countries, that the resolution would not have a dedication, and it was accepted. The second is that, in the case of Mexico, due to a very special situation, aluminum steel from Brazil is required (…) it was agreed that it will have special treatment,” AMLO said in his morning press conference.
So, what Mexico exports of steel to the United States and that contains components originating in Brazil, that will not be subject to the 25% tariff .
“That was what was achieved, and we must also think about this in the medium and long term, so that investment is made in Mexico because here we have to guarantee the free export of steel and aluminum to the United States and Canada, because we have consolidated our market and we have to continue strengthening the entire economy and trade of North America,” explained the president.
López Obrador stressed that since Mexico is the main commercial partner of the United States, exports to the neighboring country are growing significantly, which is why they want the border of their country to be completely opened and are establishing conditions for steel and aluminum.
“We are moving forward with the strengthening of self-sufficiency and the substitution of imports in North America, which is in the interest of Canada, the United States and Mexico,” he said.
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that this “important” bilateral agreement is to avoid impacts on the national steel industry.
This would fulfill the commitments of both countries under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which establishes that starting in 2027, all steel exported to the United States will be poured and cast in North America.
