“There is a temporary pause in flights to Venezuela, as you well know, diplomatic relations with Venezuela are tense, there is no certainty or predictability, but we continue to have conversations with Venezuela and we are returning Venezuelans to Mexico.”

Mayorkas highlighted the support of the Mexican government to stop the flow of migrants seeking to reach the United States border with controls on trains and at checkpoints.

“Efforts along checkpoints to move people from the north to the south of Mexico as one of the steps they have taken in the commitment to share to discourage irregular immigration.”

Although the crossing of migrants has decreased in recent months, recent figures from Customs and Protection (CBP) indicate that the new route of migrants is through California, in the month of April almost 40,000 migrants were processed in that sector of the Border Patrol .

“They are detained by the Border Patrol, which keeps them in one place to process them later at a station and then release them in San Diego, so they take flights to their destinations in cities across the country.”

Secretary Mayorkas stressed the importance of passing the bipartisan border security bill to secure the funding needed to hire more agents and asylum officers. Paula Díaz, Voice of America, Washington.
