With millions of followers on Twitch, it’s clear that El Rubius and Auronplay are among the most influential and popular content creators in the world. Despite having the unconditional support of their community, in recent days they have been involved in a viral controversy with their followers from Mexico and Latin America. As expected, this situation had an impact on their metrics.
Why did Latin American fans criticize El Rubius and Auronplay?
Last week, TheGrefg announced that the second edition of the ESLAND Awards, a ceremony that recognizes the most important Spanish-speaking streamers and gamers in the community, will take place in Mexico sometime in 2023. The news was well received by of the Latin fanatic, while influencers from Spain such as Ibai Llanos and ElXocas reacted with emotion.
However, Auronplay and El Rubius were some of the Spanish streamers who showed their disagreement with the venue of the event and hinted that they do not like the idea of making a trip to attend. They even stated during a live broadcast that “no one is going to go to Mexico.”

Although the duo of content creators never attacked Mexicans or the Latino community, the comments generated the discontent of thousands of fans in the region. Social networks experienced a boom in memes and criticism of streamers, which caused these and other media personalities to speak out on the matter.
After controversy with Mexico and Latin America, Auronplay and Rubius lost thousands of followers
In the days following the controversy, Auronplay and El Rubius reacted to negative comments from their audience and, while claiming that they never insulted the Mexican or Latin American community, apologized for their unfortunate comments.
Naturally, Spanish streamers lost a significant portion of their audience across all of their social networks while the controversy raged on the internet. It is difficult to know for sure, but it is most likely that the Internet users who stopped following them live in Latin American countries.
According to data from the Social Blade statistical site, Rubén Doblas Gundersen, better known on the internet as El Rubius, lost 26,441 followers on Twitch and 80,125 followers on Instagram between October 28 and 31, a period in which the controversy developed with greater intensity .
On the other hand, Auronplay was worse off, losing 45,078 followers on the streaming platform between October 27 and 31. The interesting thing is that, since the controversy began at the end of last week, every day he has lost thousands of followers on Instagram without exception. So far, 75,748 people unfollowed him on the social network.
It is worth noting that this data could be inaccurate, so we must take it with a grain of salt. Even so, it is interesting to discover that the duo of Spanish streamers and gamers ceased to be liked by thousands of people after rejecting the event in Mexico.
