Afghan refugees hosted by Canada since Taliban came to power rise to 30,000

13 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

More than 30,000 Afghan citizens have managed to move to Canada with the help of the United Nations since the Taliban came to power following the withdrawal of US troops from the country in August 2021, according to a report released Thursday by the International Organization for Migration ( IOM).

“The arrival of a plane in Toronto yesterday (April 12) symbolizes the happy transfer to Canada of a total of more than 30,000 Afghan refugees with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration,” he stressed.

The IOM has also specified that it has been cooperating with the Canadian government since August 2021. “A safe and dignified resettlement of refugees in countries around the world is a central part of IOM’s work. (…) We We are proud to be part of Canada’s efforts to provide a new home for tens of thousands of vulnerable Afghans,” said the organization’s director general, Antonio Vitorino.

Thus, it has specified that they will continue to cooperate with their partners at a global level to “fulfill Canada’s promise to welcome at least 40,000 Afghans.” On August 30, 2021, United States troops left the country after nearly two decades of deployment in Afghanistan.
