The leader of the Thai party Avanzar, Pita Limjaroenrat, has affirmed this Monday that he is ready to be the next prime minister of the country, after his formation obtained a surprising victory in elections marked by the rejection of the military government in favor of pro-democratic candidates.
“Dear fellow citizens, today I, Pita Limjaroenrat, have ‘clear’ and I am ‘ready’ to be the thirtieth prime minister of Thailand,” he said through his profile on the social network Twitter.
“We have the same dreams, the same hopes, and we believe that the Thailand we love can be better. Change is possible if we start doing it from today. Our dreams and hopes are quite ‘simple and straightforward’,” he added.
The unofficial count of votes shows that Avanza has won 112 of the 400 seats, by collecting 14.1 million votes; narrowly beating the Pheu Thai party, which has also won 112 MPs. After the closing of the polls, Limjaroenrat proposed to this formation the creation of a great coalition of the most voted formations.
The Pheu Thai has recognized that the winner of the election has the right to lead the government, paving the way for Limjaorenrat to become the country’s next head of government.
“The voices of the people are the most important and we respect the decisions of the people. The party that wins will have the right to propose the candidate for prime minister,” said Phey Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of the former prime minister. of the country Thaksin Shinawatra.
The acting Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan Ocha, who thanked voters for their support overnight, declared that he respected democracy and elections, and that he hoped for peace and development in the country, while noting that he will continue to perform his duties for the nation throughout his life.
For his part, the leader of the Democratic Party, Jurin Laksanawisit, has resigned after obtaining only 22 seats, occupying fifth place among the formations in order of votes, reports the Thai newspaper ‘The Nation’.
“To show my responsibility for the results of the elections, I will resign as party leader (…) No matter what position I am in, I will always side with the Democrats, as I have done throughout my political career “, has declared.
