MADRID 22 Oct. () –
Vidrala, a company specialized in the design and manufacture of sustainable glass containers, has carried out an innovation pilot project together with Acciona Energía, focused on the reuse of biomass slag (ash) in the production process of 18.3 million glass bottles, as reported by both companies in a press release.
The pilot has used 230 tons of biomass slag generated during the combustion of biomass at Acciona’s renewable electricity generation plant in Briviesca (Burgos). This material contains a high percentage of silica, a key component in glass manufacturing.
Its reuse has made it possible to significantly reduce the use of silica sand and replace part of the sodium carbonate, which optimizes the production process and reduces the environmental footprint of the process.
After a process of research and testing for the treatment of slag, the process has been successfully adapted, meeting all the resistance and durability objectives that characterize glass bottles manufactured by the usual process. The treatment of the slag was carried out in Asturias, while the manufacturing of the bottles took place at the Aiala Vidrio plant, in Llodio.
The reuse of biomass slag contributes to Acciona Energía’s objective of giving a second life to the waste and by-products derived from its activity, while promoting the circular economy and reducing CO2 emissions, constituting an “example of industrial symbiosis” between their businesses.
