For his part, the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics UC, Eduardo Cerpahighlighted the contribution of Professor San Martín in this matter: “As an academic unit with more than 40 years promoting research in mathematics and statistics, it is a great pride to know that we have academics of excellence, who permanently contribute and enrich the development of the society, through interdisciplinary work that is internationally recognized and valued”.
About the “Chaire International Francqui Professor” award
Located in Belgium, every year the Francqui Foundation grants three “International Professor Chairs”, aimed at financing the stay of international researchers to carry out academic activities oriented towards development and scientific dissemination, for a period of 3 to 6 months.
The International Chairs are in Human and Exact Sciences, Human Sciences, and Biological and Medical Sciences; and to obtain them, the academics must be nominated by at least two universities, with the prior approval of their Research Councils. In the case of Professor San Martín, he was nominated by the Catholic University of Leuven, the KU Leuven, the University of Ghent and the University of Liège.
Once the nominations have been sent, the Francqui Foundation Board of Directors, chaired by Herman Van Rompuy, chooses the academics who will be recognized. This year, there were 4: in Human and Exact Sciences, Ernesto San Martín (UC); in Exact Sciences, Hannu Toivonen (University of Helsinki); in Human Sciences, Jean-Marc Dewaele (University of London) and Ursula Heise (UCLA).
It is worth remembering that the mathematician René Thom (in 1976) and the statistician Janus Kozlowski (in 2001) were holders of this chair, as well as philosophers such as Paul Ricoeur (in 1970), Michel Foucault (1981), Alain de Libera (1994) , the French sociologist Edgar Morin (in 1984) and the dogmatic theologian Edward Schillebbeckx (in 1974).
