July 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Around 20 people died on Sunday in an attack perpetrated by armed people against two towns located in the Nigerian state of Zamfara (north), amid the deterioration of security in this area of the African country in recent months.
Residents quoted by the Nigerian newspaper ‘The Premium Times’ have indicated that the attack would have been perpetrated by militiamen of a known criminal in the area against the villages of Dangulbi and Kango, in the Maru area.
Thus, a local leader has detailed that a total of 18 people died in the assaults and has added that all of them were buried during the day on Sunday. One resident has claimed that thirteen people were killed in Dangubi and another five were killed in Kango.
On the other hand, another resident has revealed that the criminal leader, identified as ‘Damina’, last week claimed two million naira (about 4,770 euros) as a ‘protection fee’ and threatened attacks, although a high-ranking local official has specified that the authorities had reached an agreement for a truce.
“We sat down with him in the presence of the president of the local government and they promised a ceasefire,” said this senior official, who has not commented on the alleged request for money to guarantee that the bandits would not carry out attacks against the population. civil.
Insecurity in Nigeria, previously centered in the northeast of the country, has spread in recent months to other areas in the north and northwest, raising alarms about the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks.
