Abkhazia's president refuses to resign despite violent protests against him

The president of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, defended this Friday his intention to continue leading the Georgian region, independent ‘de facto’ thanks to the support of Russia, despite the violent demonstrations that have broken out in his country. against as a result of an agreement that favors Russian investments.

“Today’s events have once again put our republic in great trouble. The leaders of Abkhazia (…) are in their positions and will continue to work. Therefore, I ask you not to give in to provocation. I am here in Abkhazia, and we will continue working,” Bzhania said, according to Abkhazia-Inform.

With this last clarification, Bzhania has denied the false information that emerged on social networks and some media outlets in the country that he could have gone to a Russian military base to seek shelter. As detailed by his press service, the president is in the town of Tamishi, located in the west of the country and the president’s hometown.

Thus, President Bzhania has expressed his gratitude to that sector of the population that is still loyal to him, as well as to all the members of the Armed Forces who defend the interests of the republic. “We will make efforts to eliminate the consequences of these events,” the president stated.

Tension in Abkhazia ended up breaking out this Friday, when a group of protesters broke into the Parliament of the self-proclaimed republic to stop the ratification of a bill that seeks to boost Russian investments. Those attending the protest, called by the opposition, have clashed with the Police.

For the moment, the authorities of Abkhazia have reported that these violent incidents leave a provisional balance of thirteen injured, three of whom have required hospitalization, although their lives are not in danger. The situation is such that the Russian Foreign Ministry has recommended its citizens leave the region.
