Abbas would have informed the United States that he "is ready" to meet with Netanyahu, according to media

Jan. 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, would have communicated last week to the National Security adviser of the United States, Jake Sullivan, that he “is prepared” to meet with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, as reported by ‘The Times of Israel’.

“The offer demonstrates the seriousness of the president. Despite the extremist nature of this government (of Israel) and our experience with Netanyahu, we do not close the door to negotiations,” a Palestinian official told the aforementioned newspaper on condition of anonymity.

The two leaders have not met to take part in peace talks in more than a decade, since the last time they met officially in this context was in 2010, despite their public statements in which they have shown for years the will to meet, without reaching any materialization of it, according to ‘The Times of Israel’.

In addition, the official has indicated that Abbas would also have proposed to Sullivan to stop sanctions against Israel from international organizations such as the UN for six months in the event that the Israeli authorities ceased “unilateral movements” in the West Bank during that period of time, in reference to the demolitions of houses, expropriation of lands or incursions of the Army.

The aforementioned newspaper has reported that, despite the refusal of the executives to comment on this information, a second official familiar with Sullivan’s meeting in Ramallah, in the West Bank, would have confirmed the details, indicating that the US official would have urged Abbas to “be more pragmatic”, reiterating his opposition to Israel’s annexation of Palestinian territory.
