The Palestinian Authority affirms that the measure is “a key step” to “foster peace and stability in the region”
June 21. () –
The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, applauded this Friday the “brave” decision of the Government of Armenia to recognize the State of Palestine and maintained that it is a “bold and wise” measure that represents “a key step” in order to “improve bilateral relations” and “promote peace and stability in the region.”
The Presidency of the Palestinian Authority has noted that Yerevan’s measure “underlines the firm ties of friendship between both nations” and has praised the support of the Armenian population and Government for the Palestinian cause and the right of its people to self-determination. as reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
“Armenia’s wise decision is aligned with the principles of the two-state solution, a strategic choice that defends international will and legitimacy,” he noted, while emphasizing that “this recognition contributes positively to preserving” this diplomatic channel, which “addresses systematic challenges” and “promotes security, peace and stability for all parties involved.”
In this sense, he has called on the rest of the countries that have not yet taken this step, “particularly” those on the European continent, to announce their recognition “based on legitimate international resolutions” for the creation of a State of Palestine in the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as capital.
The Palestinian Presidency has thus asked these countries to “emulate” the recent recognitions by Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Armenia, which “have chosen to support the path towards peace, stability and the reinforcement of International Law.”
Just a few hours earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry announced the recognition of the State of Palestine in a statement in which it reaffirmed its “commitment to International Law and the principles of equality, sovereignty and peaceful coexistence among peoples” and highlighted that the country “is sincerely interested in the establishment of peace and stability in the Middle East and lasting reconciliation between the Jewish and Palestinian peoples.”
In this way, Armenia becomes the 147th UN member country that has taken the step of recognizing Palestine, following the path adopted since April by Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, Spain, Ireland, Norway and Slovenia. which has provoked harsh criticism from the Israeli authorities, who this Friday summoned the Armenian ambassador for a “severe reprimand” for the decision.
