A woman was arrested Thursday after attacking the office of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern with a sword.
A New Zealand Police spokesman has reported that a 57-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the attack on Ardern’s office.
“The woman is currently assisting the Police with our investigations into the matter and we are not currently looking for anyone else,” the spokesperson said, as reported by the New Zealand Herald newspaper.
The front door of the office in Morningside, Auckland, was found damaged on Thursday morning, while a sword lay near the scene.
According to local media, in addition to breaking the office door at around 8:20 local time, the person who attacked the premises threw a smoke bomb inside.
However, as it was early in the morning, the building was empty at the time and no injuries have been reported.
The confessed author of the incident has indicated to the ‘New Zeland Herald’ that she was in dispute with the prime minister’s office and other government offices due to health problems.
The prime minister is currently in Antarctica to commemorate 65 years of Scott Base – New Zealand’s scientific research station. The visit marks the first full Antarctic research season after two years on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
