A strange object appeared at a glamping site in North Carolina. They were the remains of a SpaceX spacecraft

Parts of a Crew Dragon, the trunk is the bottom part

A maintenance worker from The Glamping Collective, a luxury campground in North Carolinawas taking his usual walk along a path on the beautiful private property when he came across a metal and carbon fiber object lying on the ground.

The strange object of one meter high by one meter wide It was too heavy to lift by hand, so the worker towed it away from the path with a lawnmower. That’s when word spread and local station WLOS came to the scene to record it.

You don’t have to be very observant to realize that the object is similar to another that fell a few weeks ago on the land of some farmers in Saskatchewan, Canada. This is the trunk of a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Specifically, that of the Crew-7 mission that returned from the International Space Station on March 12.

The trunk is a segment of SpaceX’s Dragon ship Designed to transport cargo and equipment that do not require a pressurized environment. Unlike the cabin in which astronauts travel, the trunk is discarded before returning to Earth. However, it does not remain wandering forever in space, but also ends up re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

SpaceX has realized that the Starship is too heavy to land, so it will try something new in a few days

The Crew-7 trunk re-entered on May 21 at 20:16 UTC, according to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell. No one at the glamping site heard any bangs, despite the quietness of the remote trail where the wreckage fell.

Singed and with some carbon fibers peeling off, but with the screws still firmly screwed in, the enormous hunk of spaceship has not yet been claimed by SpaceX. Instead, the company sent a team to Australia to study a similar case in 2022.

Until now, it was believed that most of the Dragon ship’s trunk burned up during atmospheric braking, but remains found in Australia, Canada and the United States suggest that much of the ship survives.
