A ship is hit by two projectiles south of Yemen

June 13. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A commercial ship sailing through the Gulf of Aden this Thursday was hit by two projectiles, allegedly fired by the Houthi rebels from Yemen, according to the first alerts from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO).

The incident took place about 100 nautical miles from the Yemeni port of Aden. According to UKMTO, the ship has warned of the impact of “two unknown projectiles” and the start of a fire on board, without the consequences being clear.

The security firm Ambrey, which also examines navigation in the area, has reported for its part that the ship had departed from Malaysia and was heading to Italy, specifically to Venice. Due to her characteristics, she would fit the objectives under threat of the Yemeni insurgency.

The Houthi rebels have intensified their attacks on ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea in response to the military offensive launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip. In recent weeks they have warned that they may also attack ships in the Mediterranean.
