As published by ‘The Washington Post’, some of the leaked Pentagon documents, dated February 17, summarize alleged conversations between the Egyptian president, Abdelfatá al Sisi, and senior officials of his Army, whom he asks to maintain the production and shipment of weapons in secret “to avoid problems with the West”.
Specifically, in the document the Egyptian president speaks with Salah al Din, identified by the aforementioned newspaper as Salah al Din, secretary of state for military production–, who suggests that employees will have to work overtime if necessary, since that “it is the least” that can be done for “the previous aid from Russia”, without specifying what aid they are referring to.
The military also alleged that “the Russians will buy whatever” in terms of arms and ammunition, always according to the aforementioned newspaper. Asked about these accusations, the article quotes the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, who affirms that Egypt’s position on the war in Ukraine is one of neutrality.
“Egypt’s position from the beginning is based on not getting involved in this crisis (the Ukrainian war) and committing to keep the same distance from both sides,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.
In this sense, he stressed that Egypt supports the United Nations charter and the resolutions of the UN General Assembly in this regard. “We continue to urge both sides to cease hostilities and reach a political solution through negotiations,” she added.
