July 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Yuri Ushakov, adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has called on Monday to end the delivery of cross-border humanitarian aid in Syria, considering that it violates international law.
“We consider that the cross-border mechanism is a temporary and emergency measure that must be suspended since it violates international humanitarian law and, more importantly, the sovereignty of Syria,” said Ushakov, who has assured that his position is that of Moscow.
In this sense, he has pointed out that Russia’s decision to lift the veto on the UN Security Council resolution to extend the mechanism for half a year is a matter of “transience” but has warned that next time there will be more ” categorical”, according to information collected by Russian agencies.
Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and France abstained from voting precisely because they considered that the extension was not long enough. Russia, for its part, initially vetoed the measure, which was proposed by Norway and Ireland and involved an automatic one-year extension.
The mechanism has been in operation since 2014, although initially the UN and its partners were able to deliver humanitarian aid through four border crossings. Currently there is only one.
