The new round of discussions takes place in a context of new tensions between the two countries.
This Saturday a new round of negotiations began to resolve the conflict that has been facing for decades Armenia and Azerbaijanwith the mediation of President of the European Council, Charles Michel. On the agenda are the recent clashes on the border that threaten to shake the current truce.
Another point of tension is the situation in Nagorno Karabakha region for which Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
“We are going through one of the most comprehensive and vigorous stages of the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. […] And while our meeting took place against the backdrop of a worrying rise in tensions on the ground, I saw a significant boost in political debates and efforts.”Michel declared.
The discussions come against a backdrop of renewed tensions after Azerbaijan temporarily closed the corridor of Lachin, accusing Armenia of using it to transport weapons. Armenia denied the accusation and said that blocking this road is an attempt to isolate the region.
Charles Michel reiterated his intention to invite both leaders to a new meeting in Brussels after the summer, as well as another pentalateral encounter with France and Germanyin Granada on the sidelines of the next Summit of the European Political Community.
Moscow he also offered to host the foreign ministers of both countries and suggested that the future peace treaty could be signed in Moscow.
