MADRID 30 Oct. () –
A migrant died this Wednesday after falling into the water while trying to cross the English Channel aboard a boat, a maritime route that connects France and the United Kingdom and which has accumulated more than fifty fatalities so far this year.
The incident took place off the coast of the French town of Hardelot-Plage, according to the maritime prefecture, which confirmed that around a dozen people were rescued from the water. The emergency services were unable to revive one of the migrants, who was declared dead on the ground, reports France Bleu.
Some 30,000 migrants have arrived on the southern coast of England this year after crossing the English Channel, which is 12 percent more than in the same period in 2023, according to data from the British Home Office. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recorded 60 deaths on this route, an unprecedented figure since it began compiling reports ten years ago.
