A member of the Slovak government coalition announces his withdrawal from the agreement

PRAGUE, July 6 (DPA/EP) –

The liberal formation Libertad y Solidaridad (SaS) announced this Wednesday the cancellation of the coalition agreement of the Government of Slovakia, thus generating a crisis within the Executive.

Party leaders have demanded that a new agreement be drawn up, while calling for current Finance Minister Igor Matovi to resign, according to the TASR news agency.

The SaS formation has announced that its ministers will not hesitate to resign if these conditions are not met before the end of August.

For his part, the Prime Minister, Eduard Heger, has asked his coalition partner to keep open a channel of communication and has been opposed to calling early parliamentary elections.

“Slovakia is going through the most difficult times in its history, now is not the time to overthrow the government,” argued Heger, alluding to the economic crisis the Central European nation is experiencing.

In fact, one of the main reasons for this crisis within the Slovak Executive is the package of measures to tackle inflation drawn up by Minister Matovi.

The Slovak government is made up of Prime Minister Heger’s Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OLANO) party, the SaS and two other right-wing minority formations.
