A court in Iran has sentenced a man who beheaded his underage wife and subsequently walked in public with her severed head in February 2022 to seven and a half years in jail.
The spokesman for the Iranian judicial apparatus, Masud Setayeshi, has stated that “the parents of the deceased have forgiven” the person responsible for the murder, according to the Iranian news agency Mehr.
The case sparked a wave of criticism in the country after a video was released showing the man walking around with the head of his victim, 17-year-old Mona Heidari. Iranian media then indicated that she had been married at the age of twelve and that she had a three-year-old son at the time of her death.
They also pointed out that the event was an “honor killing” since the woman had fled to Turkey before her father and husband took her back to Iran. After her murder, her husband’s brother was also arrested, who was also implicated in the crime.
