MADRID 24 Nov. () –
A person lost his life this Saturday in the south of the United Kingdom when a tree branch fell on the vehicle he was driving as a result of the effects of storm ‘Bert’ that is hitting the country, official sources have reported.
Witnesses to the event alerted Hampshire County Police early in the morning “reporting that a tree had fallen on a car – a black Mercedes E350 – on the A34 southbound road, between Kings Worthy and Winnall “.
Upon arrival at the scene, the agents could only confirm the death of the driver, a man in his 60s whose family has already been informed by police officers.
Another vehicle has been damaged in the same area without any more injuries being reported, according to reports from the Police, who have closed several lanes “for long periods while emergency services worked at the scene.”
However, according to ‘The Times’, another 34-year-old man died instantly “after a car crashed into a wall in the town of Shipley.”
Storm ‘Bert’ has also caused power outages throughout the country, as well as numerous flight delays and cancellations, as well as problems in the public transportation network.
The British meteorological service had issued “national alerts for extreme weather conditions for Saturday and Sunday” the day before, warning that ‘Bert’ will bring “heavy rain and snow, along with strong winds, to large swathes of the country.”
“There are several national severe weather warnings in effect and they will be added and modified over the weekend. This may occur at short notice, so it is important that people stay informed of the latest forecasts,” added the meteorologist head of the UK Met Office.
The latest forecasts suggest that the storm, “which is moving quite slowly”, will completely dissipate starting next Monday, although “the beginning of the week will continue to be unstable”, with strong winds and rain forecast. However, “it is unknown how long the more stable conditions will last, as rain is likely to return to western areas at least by the end of the week,” the forecast concludes.
