A Malian soldier dies in an operation in which at least 30 alleged terrorists have died

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) announced this Tuesday the death of a soldier in an operation in which at least 30 suspected terrorists have also died in the Nioro area of ​​the Sahel, in the west of the country, near the border with Mauritania.

Troops “strongly repelled a terrorist attack” on Monday night, when “infiltrated terrorists with internal complicity attacked certain sensitive points in the city.” After that, they put the number of bodies “of terrorists abandoned on the ground” at 30, as well as dozens of weapons.

According to a statement from the FAMa published on their profile on the social network Facebook, they collected 19 AK-47 rifles, three machine guns, an anti-tank rocket launcher and a large amount of ammunition.

“The situation is under control and the search continues. The General Staff of the Armed Forces presents its condolences to the family of the soldier who died in combat. It salutes the professionalism of the units involved in minimizing collateral damage,” the text reads. .

The African country is currently led by a military junta established after the coups d’état perpetrated in August 2020 and May 2021, both headed by Assimi Goita, current transitional president, who has led a rapprochement with Russia while distanced from both France and Western governments, including its departure — along with Burkina Faso and Niger — from the ranks of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
