A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shakes the South Pacific

Shooting in a parking lot at the Brooklyn Center in Minnesota leaves six injured

() — A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Pacific Ocean, south of the Fiji and New Caledonia islands, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported Friday.

The quake had a depth of 38 kilometers (23 miles), the USGS said.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for coastlines within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of the epicenter.

New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency tweeted that it is assessing whether the quake “poses any tsunami threat to New Zealand.”
