A German union calls a strike in the port of Hamburg, the largest in the country

HAMBURG, June 7 (DPA/EP) –

The union of United Services Union of Germany (Ver.di, for its acronym in German) has called this Friday a strike in the port of Hamburg, in the north of Germany, which is the largest in the country, after the failure of the salary negotiations that were taking place during the day.

“The offer presented by the employers is totally insufficient,” declared union negotiator Maren Ulbrich, after which Ver.di called on the dockers to carry out a strike from 5:30 a.m. until late in the afternoon.

Ver.di is demanding a salary increase of three euros per hour starting this June, as well as the corresponding increase in bonuses per shift, which would mean an increase of 500 euros per month for some 6,000 workers, although the Central Association of German Seaport Operators has not responded favorably.
