We are used to seeing a firmament where most of the visible light points are stars. But looking further into intergalactic space, as the James Webb Space Telescope recently did, it is possible to see a firmament that we have never seen with the naked eye from Earth: a firmament where most of the visible luminous objects are galaxies, rather than stars. The large spiral galaxy in the foreground at the bottom of this photograph is LEDA 2046648. It lies more than a billion light-years from us in the constellation Hercules. It is accompanied in the landscape by many other galaxies. (Fountain: NCYT by Amazings)
