Chonthicha, 31, has been found guilty of defaming King Maha Vajiralongkorn during a speech given in September 2021 as part of a campaign calling for the release of political prisoners in Thailand.

A provincial court has thus decided to commute the initial sentence to three years in prison and reduce it to two years, in addition to accepting that the accused be released on bail, according to information collected by the newspaper ‘The Bangkok Post’.

The activist had won a seat in the last elections, in which her party – which is now facing a dissolution process – won despite ultimately failing to obtain the necessary support to form a government.

Thailand’s lese majeste law, also known as Article 112 of the Penal Code, punishes anyone who commits defamation against the king, queen or heirs to the throne and carries penalties of up to 15 years in prison.

The Constitutional Court is in fact considering a petition filed to ban the opposition party on the grounds that it has violated the Thai Constitution by trying to amend the lese majeste law.
