A CyberAttack already affects 850,000 Iberdrola users

The electric company Iberdrola has suffered a cyber attack in which attackers have managed to obtain the data of almost a million of its clients. Specifically, they have been seen the data of 850,000 of the company’s clients were compromised.

Initially, there was speculation that the number of affected people was around 600,000, but after various investigations the figure has increased to 850,000 clients because the attack has exposed data from other companies dependent on the parent company such as Curenergia.

The leaked data refer to customer contact details, including name and surname along with the ID, so they will most likely end up on the black market for possible phishing attacks and other scams through the network or telephone. It seems that no bank details or passwords have been disclosed, so the company’s clients will not have to take immediate measures other than being alert to scam attempts or if they detect that someone is contracting services in their name.

The attack has been notified to the authorities and the Spanish Data Protection Agency as required by law in this type of situation. The attack would have occurred during the first week of May, but it has not come to light until now.

The attackers accessed Iberdrola’s customer database through one of the company’s suppliers. Affected customers should receive an email or postal letter notifying them that their data has been leaked.

This is the third Spanish company attacked this month, after the attacks on Santander or the alleged attack on Telefónica.
