Sangma suffered two attacks: first he was attacked by a group in Rashimoni Bazar, near Durgapur; As he was on his way to the hospital, he was attacked a second time on the bank of the Someshwari river in Shibgonj: 20 men beat him with an iron bar.
Sangma, 47, was a member of the Garo tribe from Ranikhong parish in Mymensingh diocese. He was President of the Kullagora Union Parishad and Vice President of the Kullagora Union Awami League of Durgapur. His paternal uncle, the lawyer Promode Mankin, was a member of the Awami League Bangladesh and Minister of Social Affairs. He was treated at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital and died on October 8.
“Subroto Sangma had long been in conflict with the general secretary of the Durgapur Bangladesh National Party, Abdul Awal,” said Awami League general secretary Sajjadur Rahman. “Awal established a reign of terror by forming terrorist forces in this area. Subroto Sangma objected, and was killed. We condemn this murder and will organize a protest.”
Sangma had lost to Awal in the local elections, but had won in the previous elections.
Keya Tju, sister of the Catholic politician, filed a police complaint against Awal, his brothers and other personalities linked to his clan.
Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League and Minister of Transportation and Roads, condemned the killing and expressed his condolences in a press release.
