Authorities in Ciudad Juárez, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, launched an unusual call to find a family for an Egyptian cat that was mistreated by a criminal organization and that has been under the care of animal rescue workers for several weeks.
The cat, valued at about 2,000 dollars, exhibits tattoos on one of its sides, alluding to the criminal gang to which its owners belonged.
Given the interest aroused in adopting the 1-year-old feline and the circumstances of his arrival at a local rescue center, the municipal authorities decided to initiate the call in order to ensure a family that can offer him adequate care.
“The cat cannot be sold or alienated to another person,” said César René Díaz, director of ecology for the municipality of Ciudad Juárez, to Reuters Television.
“The cat is very sociable, it is already in perfect condition, it no longer has the infection or anything,” he explained.
The municipality said that those interested in receiving the animal should be aware of the expenses they will incur, since it is likely that it will need special medical monitoring.
A special jury of local authorities will make the final adoption decision. The municipality of Ciudad Juárez will present the new human family of the feline on March 1 in a ceremony.
