It seems that a bug in Windows Defender, present in both Windows 10 and Windows 11, it is causing strange usage of Intel processors, causing a drop in system performance of up to 6 percent. The reasons why this bug has appeared are not clear, but hopefully Microsoft will take care of it soon.
As we read in PCGamer, the bug causes Windows Defender to randomly use the seven hardware performance counters available to the processorsomething that would not be a problem under normal conditions, but that reduces performance by changing the default operating mode of these meters.
In the case of the Intel Core i9-10850K, the performance drop is 6%but since this affects all Intel processors since 2008, this figure can vary greatly depending on our processor, so it is not clear the maximum scope that this can have. AMD processors are not affected by this bug.
For now, the only temporary solution that exists is to disable Windows Defender, so logically the safest thing is to stay with the loss of performance until a patch appears that solves it.
