The British television Channel 4 has acquired a painting painted by the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler so that the public of one of his programs can vote after a debate if the work is destroyed.
Jimmy Carr’s show will deal with whether the work can be separated from its creator with the proposal to vote later on whether to tear up the Hitler painting.
A spokesman for the chain explained that they have also considered “destroying the work with a flamethrower” on the program Jimmy Carr destroys art, which is scheduled to be broadcast on October 24.
The Holocaust Remembrance Day Consortium has criticized the idea for “making Hitler the subject of a light entertainment show”.
“There is nothing entertaining or funny about Hitler or about the murder of six million Jews and the persecution of thousands more,” said the executive director of the Consortium, Olivia Marks-Woldman, in statements to the US network . “It is highly inappropriate and at a time when the distortion of the Holocaust is increasing to the point where it is trivialized,” she argued.
From Channel 4 they defend a “thorough and nuanced exploration of the limits of freedom of expression in art and whether morally despicable artists deserve to be seen”. “It deals directly with the current debate on cancel culture and has a long tradition on the Channel 4 grid,” added the station.
The ‘Hitler Watercolours’ were auctioned but left without an owner due to doubts about their authenticity. The chain bought the work despite being a public television, although with private financing.
Carr’s choice to host this episode has also sparked controversy over a recent joke about Gypsies killed during World War II by the Nazi regime. “Choosing Jimmy Carr to host this episode is a deliberate and incendiary provocation given his history of using the murder of Gypsies and Sitis by Nazis and their collaborators to make jokes,” Marks-Woldman said.
