A British soldier has been seriously injured after being stabbed near a barracks in the county of Kent, in the south-east of the country, UK authorities have confirmed.

Kent Police said they were notified of the “serious assault” at around 6pm local time on Tuesday and said the soldier who was stabbed in Gillingham was taken to a nearby hospital in a serious condition.

The police also stressed in a statement posted on their website that a 24-year-old man was arrested less than an hour later for his alleged role in the “attempted murder.” “Investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident are underway,” they added.

British Defence Minister John Healey has expressed his “shocking” over “the attack on a soldier in Kent”. “My thoughts are with the soldier and his family, who deserve privacy at this difficult time. On behalf of the Government, I wish him a speedy recovery,” he said on his account on the social network X.

According to information gathered by the British television channel BBC, the soldier, aged around 40, was attacked near his home, located near Brompton, home of the 1st Royal Army College for the Corps of Military Engineers.

The Army has confirmed what happened and has asked that the family’s privacy be respected. “We continue to work closely with Kent Police to understand what happened and support the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the attack or who has relevant information should contact Kent Police,” it added.
