A report published this Monday by the White House revealed that from 2020 to date, femicides in Latin America have increased considerably.
The evaluation, called ‘Congressional Report on the Peace and Security of US Women, 2022’points out that of a total of 25 countries with the highest femicide rates, almost 50% are located in Latin America.
Mexico carries the sad record of 736 murdered women, “which represents an increase of 5% over the same period in 2020,” says the information sheet displayed alongside the more than fifty-page report published by the White House.
The sample adds that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is associated with civil society organizations and Mexican authorities, in order to “prevent violence and improve services for survivors.”
USAID data indicates that both the women’s network and local organizations made it possible for at least 372 investigations of gender-based violence to be undertaken by the corresponding authorities, which has led to 6,504 survivors receiving legal, health and psychosocial support.
Likewise, USAID worked on the training of women in Guatemala, which resulted in the training of 55 of them, interested in assuming leadership roles, who became aware of the opportunities for participation in the community.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) highlighted that after the end of fiscal year 2021, US agencies had offered training to 8,458 women in basic and advanced knowledge in law enforcement programs.
Following the end of the 20-year war in Afghanistan, the US offered resettlement for more than 76,000 vulnerable Afghans, “including women leaders, human rights activists, humanitarian workers, journalists, and others at risk.”
