July 18 () –
The Government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson has won the confidence motion raised by the Conservative Party itself with 349 supports, while 248 deputies have voted against the motion.
The result has been as expected, although the motion itself has caused some interest given that if it had gone ahead it would have forced the calling of early elections.
Meanwhile, the internal process of the Conservative Party continues to elect the successor of the already resigned Boris Johnson as head of the party and therefore of the British Government.
Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak received the most votes in the third vote in an appointment in which Tom Tugendhat was definitively ruled out.
Sunak has achieved 115 votes, ahead of Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt (82) and Foreign Affairs Minister Liz Truss (71). Behind are the former Minister of Equality Kemi Badenoch (58) and the eliminated, Tugendhat, with 31 supports.
This same Tuesday a new round of voting is scheduled and on Wednesday the deputies will vote again to leave only two contenders.
These two candidates will submit to a vote by mail of the 200,000 party members. The new Conservative leader and therefore the new British Prime Minister will be announced on September 5.
