The mystery of the Bermuda triangle

The mystery of the Bermuda triangle

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

A group of scientists from the University of Southampton believe they have solved one of the mysteries that has aroused more theories in the last century: the Bermuda triangle, that area in the shape of an equilateral triangle located between the islands of Bermuda, Miami (Florida) and Puerto Rico, where so many ships and planes have disappeared without a trace.

It is a geographical area in the shape of an equilateral triangle located in the Atlantic Ocean, between the Bermuda Islands, Puerto Rico and the US city of Miami (in the state of Florida). By joining these three points with an imaginary line, a triangle of about 1,600 to 1,800 km on each side, and an approximate area of 1 million km².

The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle

As stated in a documentary series broadcast on Channel 5 entitled The Bermuda Triangle Enigma (The enigma of the Bermuda Triangle), the cause of the disappearance of boats and planes in this area may be in the unique waves that are generated at this point.

“There are storms to the south and north that come together, and if you add to that others that come from Florida, all this generates a potentially deadly formation of rogue waves», Dr. Simon Boxall has indicated. “They are steep and high, we have measured waves of more than 30 meters”has added.

Recreation of giant waves to find the cause

This team of experts carried out a series of laboratory experiments to recreate giant waves about 30 meters high. In addition, they also rebuilt a replica of the American ship USS Cyclops. Said ship mysteriously disappeared in the triangle of Bermuda in 1918 with 300 people on board.

Lastly, the rogue wave simulation brought the ship down with ease. “The bigger the ship, the greater the damage”, Boxall has assured in the documentary. This type of “rogue waves” they only last a few minutes. They were observed for the first time from a satellite in 1997 off the coast of South Africa.
