Russia accuses the West of pressuring African countries not to attend the St. Petersburg summit

July 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has reproached Western countries on Tuesday for the alleged pressures that they would have put in place to persuade African countries not to attend the summit that Russia has organized this weekend in Saint Petersburg with nations from that continent.

“We are well aware that almost all African states have been subjected to unprecedented pressure from the United States, French embassies” and “other Western missions,” the Kremlin spokesman said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

Peskov has directly accused them of trying to prevent this summit from taking place. “This maneuver by the United States, France and other states must be condemned,” since “they do not allow the sovereign right of African states to choose partners independently,” he stressed.

“Now more than ever it is important for us to unite with the Africans and once again continue the conversation on the grain export agreement,” stressed Peskov, who is confident that Russia will be able to convince its partners of its interest in supporting world markets, as well as to explain “on which side the obligations have not been fulfilled”, in clear reference to Ukraine.
